As we mark our 50th anniversary at the Shiawassee Community Foundation, it was with great joy and admiration that we presented the inaugural “Community Cares” award to Dutch and Rita Bouwman. This award is a testament to Rita’s outstanding dedication over 15 years, alongside her late husband Dutch, to the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and various other nonprofit organizations.
Dutch and Rita Bouwman embody the spirit of generosity and community involvement that lies at the heart of our foundation’s mission. Through their tireless efforts, they have not only kept the YAC program running smoothly but have also mentored countless young individuals on the importance of giving back to their community.
It is inspiring to see how Rita and Dutch’s impact has transcended generations, with some of our current board members having been YAC students under their guidance. Their commitment to youth leadership and community service has left an indelible mark on our foundation and the broader community.
While we mourn Dutch’s passing in November 2023, we were privileged to honor Rita at our Awards Night for her remarkable contributions.
